COOL CUTS TO TRANSFORM AN OLD TEE
Scoop that tired t-shirt from your bedroom floor, and grab some scissors – it’s time for some slashin’ fashion. Whether you want a stylish slouch, or a seriously shredded back, here’s how.
Try an easy, off-the-shoulder slouch.
Have fun with scissors (just don’t run with them!)
Want to create a splash without putting in a stitch? Go wild with fabric pens and paints! They’re great for making intricate designs or writing LOUD SLOGANS (‘Down with School!’/ ‘My other friend is Taylor Swift’).
TURN YOUR OLD DENIMS INTO A DESK TIDY
Fave pair of jeans wearing out? Don’t chuck ‘em, chop ‘em! The stiffness of denim makes it perfect for turning into something more structural (i.e. with walls!) Check out this nifty upcycle for turning your old pair into a pencil pot. With this denim desk-tidy, even homework will start to look attractive (hmm…)
The Swish has got its celebrity followers!
Strictly’ star @katyajones started upcycling when she swore off fast fashion - and went a whole year without buying clothes. She’s come up with a super-neat way to turn your old tee into a funky fringe bag - no sewing needed! Watch our video to learn how to do it yourself!
Make your own wire jewellery
No outfit is complete without accessories and if you want to create great impact with minimal fuss, you can’t beat a ring! And they're easier to make than they look...
First you need to kit yourself up, so get down to your local craft shop or (who are we kidding?) get googling for craft supplies:
You’ll need 1mm thick jewellery wire plus a pair of small pliers (if you don't want to cough up for a pair, go find an old person who's into DIY. They’re bound to have a pair shoved into the back of a drawer somewhere!)
Snip a short length of wire, and then thread on a couple beads. Twist the wire around your finger to fit, or (top tip here) find a marker pen the same width as your ring finger and fit it round that.
Twist the wire round once, twice or several times, depending on what effect you’re after. You can shape the wire to create a heart shape – or spirals – or the first letter of your name maybe? Get twisting, and see what you come up with!
If you want to be really flash, try threading a gemstone through your wire. You can buy tiny gems in boxes online or individually from crystal shops (you know those places called ‘Mystic Gems’ or ‘Sheila’s Charms’? Very popular with emos and student backpackers). Just make sure the gem stones come with a hole in them or you’ll be weeping into your wire.
Have a play, and see what beautiful jewellery you can make. Snip, twist and twiddle (which sounds like a yoga pose no-one should try). We promise your ring will turn out as unique - and chic - as you are.
If you want more ideas, YouTube will see you right. Here’s a cool ring-making video we found. Happy crafting!
Sustainable fashion is all about creating your style your way.
You don’t need to sew to get upcycling or crafting: Create something for yourself, and you’re GUARANTEED to feel great and do the planet a favour!
